'Adelaide Street Dreams'

The thought of pursuing through dirty alleyways is less than desirable, but Adelaide is becoming home to some of the most innovative art since Picasso. Rivalling Melbourne, Adelaide has street art popping up all over the city.

From graffiti, stencils, murals and posters the street art is everywhere, you just have to have a keen eye and look beyond the grimy backdrop of your local pub and you maybe lucky enough to find some street art.

Located on the corner of Magill Road and Ann Street, Stepney; this mural has the location and potential to grab the attention from pedestrians and drivers alike. Artists Kate Gagliardi, Sam Evans, Dan Withey and Peter Drew came together to form this evocative and intriguing street art mural, in early 2011. It stands strong today and is definitely worth a look, the four artists all have unique style and influence and can distinctly be seen in the four different segments.

Street art that appeared on the same wall late 2010, vastly different style and meaning, yet still intriguing and thought provoking, by artist Peter Drew.

The Adelaide Street Dreams festival for 2011 is over now but is sure to be back and better than ever in 2012. For more information, pictures and details on this years festival, have a look at their official website http://streetdreams.com.au/sloppy/.

If this has watered your taste buds for the idyllic street art Adelaide has to offer, then befriend ‘Adelaide Street Art’ on facebook for all of their masterworks across Adelaide, but for now here are a few of their snapshots to keep you going.

Inside her Wardrobe:

Kathleen Maney, 20 years old, Psychology Student....

The majority of my clothes are from Bardot, Forever New, Dotti and Sportsgirl. But I also love to buy clothes when I am at home in Mt. Gambier, there are 2 great boutiques - Redgum Country and Holiday. I also like buying hats, even though I rarely ever wear them. My favourite is the red beret bought in France.

I like to wear dresses and skirts, and love coats. My favourite wardrobe pieces would have to be my floral bubble hem dress (surprisingly found at Target!), and Black and White Coat from Style on Main.

I buy most of my ballet flats from Rubi Shoes, because they are cheap and come in so many different styles and colours. But for heels, I prefer to go to Forever New or Novo. My favourite pairs are my leopard print stilettos and my Holster wedges.

I love scarves!!! They are from all over the place, but most of them are given to me buy my family and friends. I tell people to get me a scarf when they go overseas, so they are from all around the world. My favourite is the green pashmina scarf, which was bought at a market in Paris.

I don't have a particular place where i buy my jewellery. I just buy something when it catches my eye. I love cocktail rings and bracelets. My favourite item of jewellery is probably a ring given to me by my Nan. It has been passed down through the family. I also love big flowers for my hair, because they are so pretty!

I have a weakness for scarves and handbags, rather than shoes. I buy my handbags from all different places, but my favourites are a red Pierre Cardin handbag bought in Italy and a tan handbag that I found on eBay.

Adelaide Fashion Label

casper&pearl

Stacey Hendrickson, designer and creator behind casper&pearl talks about her fashion label with great enthusiasm:

casper&pearl is a handmade fashion label just starting out in Adelaide, South Australia, for the girl next-door who never wanted to grow up. I am inspired by my childhood (which is where the name originated from) and the innocence and playfulness about it. I picture the casper&pearl girl to be adventurous but feminine, fun loving, sweet and mischevious. casper&pearl is all about dressing up in lace and floral, having a tea party, running through fields and spinning till your dizzy.

I like to make most of my pieces from vintage fabrics so that when my customers wear c&p they can feel unique and stand out in the crowd knowing that nobody else there will have that same lace dress or sheer skirt. I also pride my label in being all handmade products, it may take alot more time in the long run, but it is definetly worth it to keep the warmth to the label.

My wooden cross necklaces are one of the most popular pieces, and my grandfather cuts them all up for me in his workshop by the hundreds, so it is definetly all home-made orienated. casper&pearl is a casual wear brand aimed for women aged 15-25. I make clothing accessories (headbands, necklaces, rings) and alter vintage pieces. I started the label by selling things over facebook and at the Gilles Street Markets.

Behind the label: My name is Stacey Hendrickson and i am 18 years old. I am in my first year of my fashion design diploma at TAFE in Adelaide. It's early years for casper&pearl but it was definetly a long time coming as i grew up teaching myself how to use a sewing machine and selling home made jewellery at recess at primary school.

I am currently inspired by the 1970's, bohemian everything, pale floral fabrics, vintage lace, shear, innocence, bare backs, pale skin, Isabel Lucas, playing dress ups, chains, anything Alexa Chung wears, collars and camel. Just to name a few things that are pinned up on my wall in my workspace for inspiration.

My biggest aspiration is for the label, to take extreme heights and push it the furthest it can go. I spend any second i can get designing, drawing, sewing, posting, blogging, and advertising for the brand so it really is my passion. In the next year i am aiming to have a few stockists and a few hundred more happy customers.
